• Shampoo at least twice weekly to prevent a build up of oils at the root area.
  • Before shampooing gently brush hair starting at the ends and working up to the root area.
  • Using fingers make sure that extensions are all separated at the root area.
  • Head should be upright whilst shampooing, washing hair in the shower is ideal for this, water should be warm rather than hot.
  • Use clarifying shampoo and gently stroke shampoo down the lengths from the roots, do not rub.
  • Apply the correct conditioner for your extension type to the mid lengths and ends, then rinse thoroughly.
  • Gently pat hair to remove excess water.
  • Separate extensions at the roots with fingers before drying.
  • Spray a leave in treatment on hair and detangle carefully with a wide tooth comb.
  • Dry root area with hairdryer set to warm.
  • After root area is dry brush extensions gently whilst holding them to avoid putting too much tension on the bonds.
  • Finish drying and styling as normal.

Extensions and Sport

  • Before swimming in sea or pool apply a conditioner product and plait hair, if possible cover plait with scrunchies – this will help to maintain condition of your extension hair, this also applies if you are sunbathing.
  • After swimming in pool or sea wash hair with a clarifying shampoo ASAP to remove chlorine/sea salt traces.
  • If you take part in a sport that requires the use of tight headgear, be aware that some of your bonds may soften and/or flatten under the heat and pressure produced – under no circumstance should you loosen the protective headgear – remember extensions can be replaced.

Do

  • Brush at least twice a day, when you brush support your hair at the roots/bonds. Start at the tip (bottom) of your hair and brush downwards, as you detangle work up the hair to the bonds.
  • Loosely plaited at bedtime, this helps to prevent your extension from tangling.

Don’t

  • Sleep with wet hair.
  • Wash hair in bathwater (bubble bath may soften the bonds).
  • Use shampoos designed for dandruff or any product that contains Sulphur, wheat protein, oil or Silicon – all these ingredients may damage the bonds.
  • Back comb the roots

Hints and Tips

  • Satin pillowcases can also help prevent tangles by decreasing static build up.
  • When you detangle your hair in the morning, a little spray of detangler will help immensely, and a nice little trick is to make up a mix of water and extension friendly conditioner in a spray bottle, depending on your conditioners thickness a ratio of 3:1 should be good (3 parts water to 1 part conditioner), it is important to thoroughly detangle extensions every day as the bonds can become matted together.
  • Straighteners and curling tongs can be used but care should be taken near the bonds – if a quality adhesive has been used, the bonds shouldn’t fail but will distort with too much heat applied.
  • Conditioner should not be applied to the root area near the bonds as it can cause the bonds to break down and the extension fall out.
  • Only ever apply styling products to the mid lengths and ends of hair because they may contain oil, wax, silicone or alcohol ingredients that may break the bonds down.

NB. When bonds are discussed on this aftercare, it should be noted that the type of bonds referred to are keratin wax bonds and not microrings. Microrings will not distort under heat, again straighteners/tongs should be used carefully as the rings are metal and will obviously get very hot, all other aftercare mentioned should be followed to promote the life of your extensions.
